Types of W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr‌‌ Refractory Metals

The W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr‌‌ Refractory Metals produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Tantalum Sheet

It has excellent performance in high-temperature and strong acids (such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid) and chloride environments, and its corrosion resistance exceeds that of titanium and Hastelloy.

Tungsten Alloy Rods

Tungsten alloy rod is used in many fields, such as in machining, in the process of casting cannon barrel, tungsten alloy rod drill pipe is mainly through single-point cutting tool drilling to expand the round hole, so as to obtain a round hole with a precise diameter.

Zirconium Rod

Zirconium rods are reactive metals with a high affinity for oxygen, so a protective oxide film in room temperature air will form a protective oxide film, which gives tungsten and its alloys excellent corrosion resistance.

Niobium Foil

Niobium is a silver-grey, rare, soft and ductile transition metal. Its oxide, niobium pentoxide, has a similar effect to aluminum oxide and zinc oxide, which can protect the inside of the metal from corrosion.

Advantages of W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr‌‌ Refractory Metals
R05200 Tantalum Sheet

A Very High Melting Point
Refractory metals such as tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum have very high melting points, making them beneficial in glass making.

High Strength
Refractory metals are uniquely strong, even at ultra-high temperatures.

Outstanding Abrasion and Wear Resistance
Refractory metals, especially alloys, can extend the lifespan of valve seats, seals, nozzles and other areas prone to high wear.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance
The piping in chemical plants is typically made of refractory metals, allowing for a high degree of corrosion resistance compared to stainless steel.

Thermal Shock Resistance
Metals like tungsten can resist the stress brought by quick expansion because of heat. Tungsten has a very high melting point and can withstand a series of on-and-off cycles without affecting its intactness.

Heat and Electrical Conduction
On top of their many electronic or electrical applications, refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum make good heat sinks.

Extreme Hardness
Today, most widely used cutting tools are made from materials like tungsten carbide. Refractory metals are also great for forming metals and steel as well in mining and drilling gas or oil wells.

High Density and Specific Gravity
Most refractory metals have high density and thus can be very useful for making golf club heads and aircraft gyroscopes.

Unique Capabilities
Some refractory metals that have ultra-useful capabilities—such as acting as outstanding radiation shields and chemical catalysts.

Applications of W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr‌‌ Refractory Metals

Aerospace And Defense

Jet engines, rocket nozzles, and missile components require materials that can withstand extreme temperatures and mechanical loads.

01

Energy Sector

Nuclear reactors, fusion technology, and high-temperature turbines depend on refractory metals for their radiation resistance and thermal stability.

02

Industrial Manufacturing

High-performance tools, furnace components, and extrusion dies use these metals for their durability in harsh environments.

03

Medical Technology

Tantalum is widely used in implants due to its biocompatibility and resistance to bodily fluids.

04

Electronics And Semiconductors

Molybdenum and tungsten play a crucial role in microelectronics, heat sinks, and vacuum tube components.

Precautions for Using W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr‌‌ Refractory Metals

Thermal Shock

When refractories are subject to thermal shock cycles, the material’s elasticity decreases, making it subjectable to cracks and ruptures.
Don’t: Quickley heat or cool parts made of refractory materials. Refractories can withstand high temperatures but need to do so in a controlled manner. Heating or cooling your refractory parts or furnaces too fast may cause cracks or fragments.
Do: Heat or cool your parts or furnaces in a controlled manner to avoid hot or cold spots. Curing, drying, and preheating your part or furnace will extend longevity. Proper furnace insulation will contribute to controlling temperature to prevent thermal shock.

Oxidation & Chemical Reactions

Refractory materials are susceptible to surface oxidation. Stabilization against oxygen attack is lost at high temperatures as the oxide layer dissipates, thus reducing corrosion resistance.
Don’t: Expose your part or furnace to conditions that will negatively react to the refractory material. Avoid chemicals, gases, or slags that are not compatible.
Do: Choose a coating for your refractory material that’s resistant to oxidation and is compatible with the conditions in which it will be used. Use sealants, coatings, linings, or barriers when applicable. Various coatings can withstand high temperatures from 1100° to 4,500°.

Physical Shock & Stress

Refractory metals are known for their superlative hardness but are not impervious to physical forces.
Don’t: Subject your furnace or parts to impact, vibration or abrasion that can cause ruptures, fractures, or dislodgement of the refractory bricks or castings.
Do: Install and anchor your part or furnace to resist motion that will negatively impact its integrity.

FAQ

Q: What is the most common reason for selecting a refractory metal?

A: Refractory metals, such as W, Mo, Nb, and Ta, are attractive materials for engineering applications at elevated temperatures, due to their high melting points and excellent strength. These materials have good creep resistance, void swelling resistance, and very low solubility in oxygen-poor liquid Pb and LBE.

Q: Which casting method is commonly used for refractory metals like tungsten or molybdenum?

A: Powder Metallurgy: The Preferred Method for Refractory Metals. Powder metallurgy is a widely used method for processing refractory metals, offering several advantages over melting. It involves compacting metal powders into a desired shape and then sintering the part to form a solid structure.

Q: What is the temperature range of refractory metals?

A: The common characteristics of refractory metals and their alloys are high melting point, high strength at high temperatures, and good corrosion resistance to liquid metals. Their use temperature range is 1100~320℃, which is much higher than that of the superalloys.

Q: What is the life of refractory material?

A: To give an example, a glass melting furnace coated with AZS (aluminum – zirconia – silica) has a lifespan of 14 – 18 years, if all maintenance jobs are done in time. The same furnace with a different coating material other than AZS will be subject to a lifespan of 6 – 8 years.

Q: What is the temperature of refractory dry out?

A: Heat needs to be applied to remove both types of water. The physical and chemical water is released at certain critical temperatures during the dryout which are as follows: Removal of free water: 212°F (100°C) Dehydration of major cement phases: 440°F (227°C), 530°F (277°C), and 1020°F (549°C)

Q: Can refractory get wet?

A: Moisture not only accelerates the corrosion of the material but can also cause the insulation to deteriorate or break down, impacting the long-term stability of the equipment. This moisture issue, particularly in some industrial settings, can pose serious safety risks.
