Tantalum Sheet

Precautions for Using W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Zr Refractory Metals
Thermal Shock
When refractories are subject to thermal shock cycles, the material’s elasticity decreases, making it subjectable to cracks and ruptures.
Don’t: Quickley heat or cool parts made of refractory materials. Refractories can withstand high temperatures but need to do so in a controlled manner. Heating or cooling your refractory parts or furnaces too fast may cause cracks or fragments.
Do: Heat or cool your parts or furnaces in a controlled manner to avoid hot or cold spots. Curing, drying, and preheating your part or furnace will extend longevity. Proper furnace insulation will contribute to controlling temperature to prevent thermal shock.
Oxidation & Chemical Reactions
Refractory materials are susceptible to surface oxidation. Stabilization against oxygen attack is lost at high temperatures as the oxide layer dissipates, thus reducing corrosion resistance.
Don’t: Expose your part or furnace to conditions that will negatively react to the refractory material. Avoid chemicals, gases, or slags that are not compatible.
Do: Choose a coating for your refractory material that’s resistant to oxidation and is compatible with the conditions in which it will be used. Use sealants, coatings, linings, or barriers when applicable. Various coatings can withstand high temperatures from 1100° to 4,500°.
Physical Shock & Stress
Refractory metals are known for their superlative hardness but are not impervious to physical forces.
Don’t: Subject your furnace or parts to impact, vibration or abrasion that can cause ruptures, fractures, or dislodgement of the refractory bricks or castings.
Do: Install and anchor your part or furnace to resist motion that will negatively impact its integrity.
