The Manufacturing Process Of Titanium Welded Pipe
Titanium welded pipes are manufactured by continuous roll forming of titanium strips and finally welded through a welding process. The selection of high-purity titanium strips (such as Gr1, Gr2 pure titanium or Ti-3Al-2.5V alloys) must comply with ASTM B265 standards. The surface of the titanium strip requires pretreatment such as degreasing, pickling (removal of the oxide layer), etc.The titanium strip is continuously crimped into a tubular shape through multiple sets of rolling dies. The welding method is determined according to the wall thickness and cost of the titanium pipe, and the on-line weld inspection - X-ray or ultrasonic flaw detection is required after welding.
ERW (High Frequency Resistance Welding): Suitable for low- and medium-end pipes.
Laser Welding/TIG Welding: for high-precision, thin-walled pipes (e.g. automotive exhaust systems).
TIG Welding: inert gas shielded (argon), uniform weld seam, suitable for thin-walled pipes (0.5-2.0mm).
Laser Welding: small heat-affected zone, high precision, suitable for complex structures.
Heat Treatment: annealing removes residual stresses and improves corrosion resistance (typically 650-750°C).
Surface Treatment: pickling or electrolytic polishing to remove the oxide layer and improve the surface finish.
Advantages Of Thin-Walled Titanium Exhaust Pipes:
Lightweight: The density of titanium (4.5g/cm³) is only 57% of that of stainless steel (7.9g/cm³), which can significantly reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency.
High Temperature Resistance: long-term resistance to 400-600°C exhaust temperature (stainless steel is easy to oxidize and discolor).
Corrosion Resistance: resistant to sulfide and chloride corrosion in the exhaust gas, and the service life is extended by 2-3 times.
High Specific Strength: Suitable for exhaust system design of high-performance cars or racing cars.
The Specific Application Scenarios Of Titanium Exhaust Pipes
Front Section: directly connected to the engine, it needs to withstand high-temperature impact (titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is more used here).
Middle Section: It needs to be resistant to chemical corrosion of catalysts, and Gr2 pure titanium is commonly used.
Tail Section: Thin-walled design (0.8-1.2mm) optimizes sound attenuation through the acoustic properties of titanium.
Wall Thickness And Size Standards For Titanium Exhaust Pipes
Wall Thickness Range:
Conventional Exhaust Pipe: 0.8-1.5mm (both light weight and strength).
High-Performance Models: 0.5-1.0mm (ultra-thin walls achieved by laser welding process).
Heavy Vehicles: 1.5-2.0mm (higher pressure resistance required)
Common Sizes:
Diameter: 50 mm (small car) to 150 mm (sports car/modified car).
Length: Customized cut (usually 1-6 meters, adjusted according to the layout of the model).
Shape: Mainly round, some models use elliptical or special-shaped tubes to optimize the space layout.
